Outrageous Restriction of Internet @ Bhawans

No internet from 9 am to 4 pm and from 12am to 5am.

This seems to be a decision taken with much care with the sole aim of harassing the students.  If we complain to the officials, they say it's available in Computer Centres and the Library. The Internet's idea was to have information at a click. Not to have information after a 10 min walk in the sun, where thousands of students are fighting for 30 computers.

Tutorials, Presentations, Reports. Everything requires the Internet.  And the time after midnight is the most active time in the campus for students to work. Are they trying to refine our sleeping habits?  Even if they're concerned about misuse of the Internet, this is definitely not the way to hinder it.  They're just calling for a reduction of more than half in the student's productivity.

Yeah the restriction is pointless.

Whether they want to refine sleeping habits of students or not, one thing clear from this kind of act is that its a step backward. And this again shows that most people in the admin do not take informed decisions. High speed internet is considered as one of the basic necessities in developed countries. Its good to see that Indian colleges also started realising the power of internet and providing high speed connections is definitely a way of gauging facilites in a college. Some people say that students here misuse the internet or become insomniacs and so on. While this miight be true, but those students form a small percentage of the student junta at IITR. Also college night outs are not just a thing of today's era, it has been continuing since last decade and most probably since much before. Besides the spoiled students will always find other ways of having fun like watching more movies, games, etc. If anything these will just affect students who need to get some work done overnight. We all know that online info is the basis of most of the reports and presentations today. Rather than just disrupting internet service whimsically, it would have been better if the admin could find ways to at the very most restrict certain time wasting sites (eg social networking sites, chat clients, etc) like it happens in corporate world. But they chose the easiest path and sadly the worst one. This also shows the lack of student representative body in IITR. Truly, we are not capable of making protests and making our voices heard. But one thing is for sure, if India has to progress, people surely need to rise above such petty restrictions and broaden their view. In today's era, even a minute of disconnectivity from outside world proves catastrophic at times. Rather than going backward, the admin should take a cue from successful institutes worldwide before taking such a bad and annoying decision. One thing is for sure, it must have left a really nice impression on the freshmen. The admin never fails in losing the trust of students!!!

Totally agreed. Internet is so necessary for the students at every step of their academic career, be it the presentation, reports or general research. Internet is probaby the single most important thing in campus life and beyond these days.

And the restrictions on the time are simply pointless and downrightly retarded for an institute like IIT. I dont know on what basis the authorities took this decision. You might need the internet at any time of day, since major part of our life is online now. Be it email correspondande, consulting some research paper/presentation or downloading some useful software.

The alternatives that the institite assure us are just not enough or maybe not alternative at all.

I think we should get the authorities to notice this thread and get as much replies as possible.

even the internet in the library is too slow...at 2:30 in evening i tried using net in library with only a couple of students around....and still it took 3-4 minutes to even open google....obviously i didn't try my hand on any other site

and the internet in azad bhawan is already blocked or too slow from around 10 pm in the night.....4 days before this idiotic ban already....this situation is ridiculous...

There are two reasons for such a ban to be imposed :

  1. to curb the misuse of internet and nightouts to get us out of our insomnia

  2. To try to solve the connectivity issues in bhawans

The proper solution for the first one would have been implementation of download limits, blocking of sites, and so on (as someone said is done in corporate environments). However i am reminded of a case at iitk where a student had committed suicide(an extreme case) and the media labeled the reasons as stress due to excessive game play and internet usage (somehow). When the administration was asked would they try to curb the net usage, by blocking net access during night hourse, their answer was "never".

why is iitr taking such a drastic stand, i don't understand. and if its the second reason (above), then surely they must agree that building better infrastructure is the solution, not these stupid stunts that would lead to who knows what!

This is pretty stupid, blocking internet at such crucial times. Not to mention the port blocks which infacilitate sharing of information over P2P networks.....

I don't think such a step was ever taken in any known university/college....  Are we revolutionizing in the field of taking the world back to the stone age???  Whatever the reasons for such restrictions should be made accountable...  We should probably file an RTI.

The reason the administration has done this is :

  1. Students should not waste time surfing th e net in late hrs .

  2. They should sleep well and go to class on time.

  3. Students should learn time management .

Friends i  totally agree with u all. that  internet is the basic need of the hour . But friends , u cannot deny the fact that internet is more misused than it is used for some academic or skill development.

We generally do not use the free hrs that we sometimes get b/w our lectures . Also the time b/w 7-12 is not properly utilized .

On the contrast , we start our work in the midnight  and then get up late  and then we r late for class.

In the morning we generally don't get up before its 5 min to lecture. We generally do not  utilize the 6am to 8am slot.

Friends , now since the decision has been taken , i think we should move forward and concentrate on managing our time more judiciously.

Started to use the insti webmail as an alternative today and noticed that it has an upper limit of 50mb. and I've already filled 1mb. 50 more days. what after that?

On a more serious note, does the administration have the right to decide what we do with our time. I mean the canteen can stay open till 2 am excusably for students who stay up late night studying. But these very students are devoid of the best source of knowledge there can be. I mean how can this be correct?

If there is a reason for this being done, it is only because the institute cannot cope up with the infrastructural needs of a higher number of students demanding internet, and has resolved to this as a quick fix.

they should have a sense of shame by even thinking abt such a ridiculous concept..

and what was the reasons again for restricting the net? students turn up late to class, students are sleeping in class coz all night long they watch movies and or chat on the net...thers'spornography circulating which is bad, and one other that i remeber was..misuse of the internet.

all the reasons stated above are true to a certain extent; (yes, ask youselves, it is true) howeever, the geniuses who had figured out that these all problems were arising out of "unrestricted access of the internet, at all times" should think again.

again, what they have thought is partially true, in the sense that, "unrestricted access" is unhealthy..then, why is it so diificult tor these geniuses to realise that "BAANNING ADULT SITES" will clear major chunk of these probs..

students do have various reasons to turn up late..there's a serpentine queue for braekfast every morning, esp whn the time's running out..that needs to be looked into, not the internet access..

the actual reason y its even more frustrating is that fact that, they have the right to restrict internet usage, provided, they give desired speed whn required. AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT'S NOT HAPPENING.

the net is slow as it is..even during normal times, its a nigtmare to do anything on the net, it is maddening n fluctuating all the time, often disconnecting.

n now, with such a ban, all students would obviously try accessing net only within a given timeframe, ..why is it so hard for them to raelise that at such a time, it is IMPOSSIBLE to provide internet to all users at such high user density and such less bandwidth?

hope these fools grow up and stop being sadistic, no point in scolding them here, coz, nothing good is gonna come out of it..all we can pray for is for them to face a similar situation like us, where the problem and the solution is apparent, bt are powerless to change a thing!

Perhaps a signed petition must be submitted to the dean of students welfare. Maybe SAC should take the initiative -for a change- once it is formed to make such a petition. I am sure almost everyone would be more than willing to sign it.

its 3:30 am in morning as i write this post...

yaar... there's no net in radhakrishnan bhawan... all i wanted was to download some softwares for my phone and games maps (cs) and a movies... and some porn may be... i SLEPT IN AFTERNOON ... im NOT INSOMNIAC ... just a random student who can't sleep coz I ALREADY DID.

the lift doesn't works... yeah mostly it doesn't

7 floors of stairs got me out of my bhawan... then the guard says ...  "not allowed to roam between bhawans from 12-5 am " ... ANOTHER RULE.... OUT OF NOWHERE!!!

i really am a hardworking student... trying very hard not to use expressive f letter words and phrases.

i submit my icard as property proceeded to cautley bhawan... what i get... THEY'VE ALREADY BLOCKED INTERNET ACCESS IN NIGHT ... bacchon... its only 6th august... not 9th... we know how good your management and decision taking skills are... DON'T MISUSE THEM !!!

College campuses are supposed to be student friendly... fitting their needs.... and IIT campuses should've been better... this is not a jail... and we're not criminals... even roaming in bhawans is not allowed... no internet access... ruining those perfect bday nights...

there have been perfect days for me in iitr... and im sure all of us do... but what ends that day... just ruins the fun.

another example...

a perfect bday... a perfect party... oh i got late... its 11... happily walking to iit main gate... with smile on face, remebering all the fun you had today... WHAM!!!... Guard stops you... officers scold you for being late... they interrogate you...search you for alcohol and drugs... wt? ... you're tested for alcohol test... turns out negetive.. you're innocent ...proved... yet they take your icard... and submit it for FURTHER INVESTIGATION...

i've been coming up with stupid scenarios ,thanks to our iitr perfect management system... that will make my dreams come true...

i know there are very small percentage of students on whom these are applicable. but everyone's not the same...we too have some management skills ... without you teaching us... and they are way better than yours....they are an individual's conscience.

LET US LIVE IITR...WE DO SCORE... WE BUILD YOUR REPUTATION IN WORLD... DON'T LOSE YOURS IN OUR EYES...DONT  MAKE US FEEL LIKE WASTING OUR GLORY TIME IN CAPTIVATION.THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT DEGRADES STUDENTS....MAKE US HAPPY...AND WE WILL DO THE SAME FOR YOU.

Right, so I didn't get a welcome e-mail from the dean, can anyone pass me his E-mail? Tyvm <3

On to the topic.....

If this was indeed to curb 'certain stuff' then why not just be specific about it? I mean even I could help them block porno and stuff...

And please, do try to distribute internet evenly. You can limit every connected user to 100 kBps? (Kilobytes that is. That's about 800kbps, which is not much as I'm hoping IIT Roorkee has a lease line of at least 60mbps.)

Please unblock my ports. You're doing more harm than good. If you're blocking every ports for the spyware, trust me, you can reopen a lot of them as they are secure.

9AM - 4PM is really harsh. So is 12AM-5AM. Sometimes projects just do take time. You're busy doing a project and just wham, 12 strikes on the clock and you're project is pwnt. Remove that, sir. That is a horrible feeling.

Moderators, please don't make my post vanish, it makes me Q_Q so very hard D:

Please do something about this. You can't just block internet 12 hours a day for the year.

Yours sincerely,

Soumitr Pandey

Rajendra Bhawan

PS: I do realize this is Think Tank and not Talk to the Dean but this is the closest I can get, hoping that some awesome guy who's at IMG will read this and forward it to the Dean.

i too dont accept this ban, if they really worried about the misuse they can allot a download limit to the users, but internet round the clock should be be provided as we are saying ours is one of the leading institution.

that too this decion is goin to make the load increased at the available times so not even the google page is openin. in my opinion this is not a good decision to implement

There are students of quite older ages in the campus.Do these people had taken the moral guardianship of them too apart from that of taking of kids - who are not actually declared adalt by the power of constitution?

Not only IITR but here it's seems to be a trend to be moral guide for sake of others.

We know what we need to do to get out of here with a degree as a side effect.

what the hell does it matter about my personal lifestyle?

Did they dream about a return of  'gurukul' -IIT here to prove 'we are there where we were before centuries'?

For GOD's sake then ask them to extend all time limit twice as that of earlier.

BDW and what about the institution fees we are made to pay??

This is not the right way 2 addess the problem of connectivity  in the Bhawans. However in  other IITS, students are provided with high speed internet round the colck in thier rooms as well. This  questions our standards when we are trying to catch other IITs..The admin. people need not  to think about the students who are wasting their facilities, coz all the students are well grown up. It's the matter of student job to manage time and usage of the web sources. The students from PH.D and M.tech face a big problem as research demands net resources...It will be better if another solution is found soon..

Local sharing is another option which allows the sharing of data, knowledge  among the students in the campus. Please lookafter these as soon as possible.

Local sharing can be facilitated by opening up the ports and using P2P software such as DC++.

Educational information can be hosted on the central mainframe and students can download it whenever they want.

It can be grouped by stream/subject or something.

Earlier when i was studying and if couldnt undersand any topic what i had to do is to simply open google or wiki and i get my

solution quickly but now what to do??

Should i wait for 4-5 hours to see whether net is coming or not and then continue my studies. Certainly we are going back.

I used to boast about my campus and college that we have this facility, that facility and juniours also used to wander how good is our college

but now i certainly have to say that our college even lacks basic facilities like 24hr internet. If somebody listens and he is preparing for JEE, certainly

Well there are many other things that require concern other than the misuse of internet; like we dont have a single common Canteen of campus ; neither do we have a proper stationary or photocopy shop; and those which are there are not even worth mentioning.

All their attention has been reduced to two things: Speed breakers and internet jammers. And even after the policy, Speed is not guaranteed... It really SUX

And please somebody ask them what r they doing of the money they are getting for WIFI connectivity from Central govt., approx. 5 lacs ...GR8

I am sorry but i haven't read the articles above me but i would like to give suggestion for the above problem is the introduction of a guard/blocker which would restrict the access to unwanted websites or content including downloading. For instance, the place where i did my intern, they had a "Forti Guard" which blocked the access to all the flash contents, downloading websites if necessary, and other unwanted contents. Moreover, buying such a gaurd/blocker won't be an issue to the institute. I believe this can serve our problem and will be acceptable to both students and the authorities.

Well, I also believed that some changes were required in the facility of internet like limit over downloading or access to websites if necessary, but such stern steps were not required.

I would kindly request the moderators to at least proceed this request further, if possible.

If the administration thinks that they can improve the net conditions by imposing such ridiculous bans.. they are gravely mistaken... The conditions will be even worse when the whole institute will fight for the same bandwidth in a shorter time.. and this condition exists even when the 2nd year has no wifi and only 20% of the freshers have a laptop... imagine the situation in the next semester...

I think we should put a chart in each Mess on which students can sign and tell whether this new system is beneficial for them or not. We can then show these charts to DOSW.

Also, the idea of open ed in "The Hindu" is a good one. Someone should look into that.  IITR administration has turned into a dictatorship and they do whatever they please. Maybe some humiliation from media will make them to think twice before taking such non-sense decisions in the future.

nbsp;yeah... students from all hostels should sign and give a petition..

nbsp;

Let us see how we can protest peacefully against rules at IIT Roorkee , which hamper the fundamental right of a student to gain knowledge, with out hurting our grades.

nbsp;

may be , someone should write an article about the plight of students at IIT Roorkee and send it to a leading newspaper, like the open ed page in "The Hindu" . May be we can contact alumni to help us change the system.

nbsp;

Seems it has become impossible to correct the IIT R system from inside, a little pressure from the media might help the authorities at IIT R to be a little more sensitive towards the genuine problems faced by students.

nbsp;

or may be we can create an online forum and create fake accounts( to prevent backlash ) to express our grievances truly with out fear of repression, and then send the link to the authorities at IIT Roorkee.

nbsp;

I was just wondering whether the time has come , to convert  "IIT Roorkee" , back to "University of Roorkee"..  Why simply pretend to be an IIT when even the basic facilities are not available here.  Why simply lure bright students flashing the IIT brand and then spoil the most productive years of their lives by putting them inside an intellectual and physical jail ?

IIT is said to be at the cutting edge of technology. Taang teri, I say.... I mean they're boasting "round-the-clock Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the campus for aid in Study" on the website....

Oh hell yeah, they said "Wi-Fi connectivity", not  the "Internet connectivity" that Wi-Fi gives.... WOW this is IITR!!! If funds is the case, first of all stop the FRIGGING GARDENING!!! We dont need 'Maalis' we need teachers and internet. We're not here to enjoy a vacation in Corbett's greenery, we're here to study, and become a premier professional. So we don't need beautiful 3-D geometered lawns and flower-bushes, WE NEED THE GOD-DAMNED NET!!

It's really a pity IITR admin is behaving this way.... Mess food is so bad, half of my hostel guys are down with fever 102F. Well, that's another issue, but the point is that if you cant give net connectivity, don't put stupid routers blinking all night! There is 101% something wrong in the funds Dept. Let's flood the DOSW, let him remind his designation; DO"Student's Welfare". Admin has really let me down. If they cant give the students basic amenities of good standars, how are they going to give the country "Elite professionals" We're supposed to be?

this kind of moral policing does not suit an institute which claims to be a premier institute of india. i am of the view that if they have to impose the time restricions on internet then they must ensure that internet works properly in the given time in every room of the every department and every hostel. for that they will have to increase the infrastrucure for internet to meet the congestion and the growing student population.
