Do we live in the same IIT ? I totally love the speeds here. I'm not joking. Just because you guys don't know how to get the best out of things, doesn't make the things bad. I can download 10 GB on any normal day and have done 30-40 GB on good days. Noobs will tell you torrents don't work here. Lol, I've downloaded easy 5 GB from torrents in a day many times. Ciao

listen one more truth----the IITR management keeps on increasing the bandwidth with 2 hostels currently with no receivers at all -kasturba and rkb and with others having routers 1998 model which can absorb only 25% of the present bandwidth. so no matter how much you increase more band, it will absorb only a fixed part..they are spending the money but the question is how?

3GB is not the speed but an average alloted bandwidth at any hostel in iit d.

@Ishani, Not that I want to dispute with your discussion issue, but the details you gave are misleading. No Wifi router was ever built that gives speeds greater than 480Mbps, which again costs well into the five digit figure. (I'm refering to D-Link N Extreme and Some particular model of Netgear N-Router.)
Secondly, the SATA Cables that are being used in the hard disk you use in the laptops are 3Gbps. As far as LAN cables go, I hardly doubt they reach 400Mbps. (Though they're '1Gbps' LAN Cables available, but trust me, they ain't even half as fast as USB 2.0 - that is 540Mbps.)
Thirdly, if IIT-D is having a such a huge bandwidth, they'd prefer LAN than WiFi 'cause of large amounts of transmission losses. Transmission through optical fibres are still the best way to transmit data, till laser technology is in place.
Fourthly, your friend must be mentioning the speed, though I doubt it to be 3Gbps, to be of thier central repository systems (ie. DC++ Based servers.)
..
Intention of my adding these points were to add a dimension of reality in the issue of our internet connectivity, which you're right, is a very serious issue.
Whatever I said, still doesn't dispute the fact that IIT-D Internet facility is way better.
Do read my latest post in think tank.

@ishani
good question raised but i think the thread has grown too long but no one has thought of thinking for a solution....
the coz tht we r lacking all this things and have lots of things to complain is that we complains a lot but do nothing.....
i personally also have done anything in this regard but i want to say that we can use portal like think tank for discussing solutions for problems and also putting out some innovative and iitians type ideas for facing the sadist system here....
i have seen that think tank has become a measure to take out frustration against authorities but no one thinks that we can use it as a power of ourselves.....
