A NEW BC CRITERIA

I m not the person to make the rules nor i m qualified enough to guide others to make rules.......

But i have enough freedom to express my view......

so acc to me a new criteria could be followed to help students to get there branch changed......one can think of a common exam for all those who have c.g.p.a above 8 points and then allowing them to get there branch changed throug this we can minimise the presure of studies on students and even help them to give them time to think about there overall development and personality issues.......

i agree that u cannot even judge the capabilies of a person through a single test ,but this dosn't means that u cannot have any solution to this.....u can have a sequence of exam or a more technical exam can be there which is not as boring as our mid terms and end sem which are full of theoratical ques rather than technical concepts........

So i think a intra-IIT quality exam like JEE can provide a new opurtunity to get his or her dream branch......

(pls avoid all gramatical errors.....:) )

Its more like you need a second chance to make up ur performance in JEE.

Get over it buddy. You have given JEE once and performed well and your best(according to your fate). Thats all . Dont keep beating the same bush again and again like 'How much fun was JEE! Look at the standard of JEE! Oh its full of conceptual question! ya yaa and  yaa. NOw its time to move on and see the other facets of the life and world.

And how do a one more exam is going to ease pressure and develop personality since in your words "to get there branch changed throug this we can minimise the presure of studies on students and even help them to give them time to think about there overall development and personality issues.......". Come on friends it just going to boost tension, pressure to study and compete like it was in jee(no one will give a shit to extra curriculars). Do u think on implementing a new exam(in addition to already existing one) will help people by giving them time to think about overall development. As you said single exam is also not the best way to determine anything. A continous way and methodology to measure ur  performance and abilities is a much much better solution than any single exam so the need is to improve the standard of our midsem and ensem exams . Not to add any other single exam(or replace it by any single exam). Thats all.

This pretty much goes against the idea of continuous evaluation which is the cornerstone of our education at IIT. So now, a branch-change desiring student should be incentivized to ignore his mid-terms, end-terms and practicals and concentrate on a single exam at the end, like we do to our 12th boards vis-a-vis JEE? Forget it!

Technical questions??? Most subjects in first year are not technical in nature but derive from the sciences or arts. So where do you get technical questions from?

I find the current system to be satisfactory and I've used it myself. As a branch-changer I can assure you that it is a myth that you have to cut-off yourself from the world to get a magical CGPA. You can do every single thing that you are interested in as long as you do it in moderation and manage your time properly. And that's pretty good advice for people who don't want a branch change too!

well..in your ideas ,i can see a great desire to bring about a immmensely needed change to reduce pressur on students..but i guess..for a branch change a respective branch aptitude test and an interview round will really be a better option..as  only the one who can prove his point  before the Committee, why he needs to change his branch and how he can bring about a change for the Insti and nation thereabout...should be given a chance..rather than the one who 'mugs' every subject around the whole year to get  his branch changed...

Asa a matter of fact , such a criteria ensures only those persons to enter a particular branch who can really bring revolution in that field that can be constructive to the nation ( as is expected from us being iitians) ......rather than those people..who again start mugging blindly..as  they were doing earlier...

i hope you have got my point. :

I think the current Branch Change criteria is not justified , not that building a good CGPA creates an enormous pressure but it is not a benchmark of that guy interest in the branch. Rather there should be basic courses of all branches in the first year as currently there are. If a students want to get in some branch let's say Computer Science he should get himself in the list top 5 students based on the marks in the exam. There will be no need of taking any interviews as that person would have proved his capability for that branch
