not good
1. syllabus will be more
2. once one midterm is messed up no chance for redeeming oneself and also the sessionals will be granted accordingly.

definitely it would justify the word 'mid-term". have you seen two midpoints of a single line??????????????????????

Would prefer a single mid semester exam as firstly its an added pressure on the students (having 3 examinations in 4 months). Better to give more weight-age to stuff like projects and assignments rather than mere mid-sem examinations. They are equally important to understand and learn the subject.

See, my style has always been to use MTE1 to gauge a subject. Based on my performance in that I adjust my studying in MTE2 and finally the ETE. So two MTEs does help me. But I guess if they had quizzes instead of full fledged MTEs it would be just as good.

The MTEs are just to track the students' performance and their understandability. So, having 2 MTEs are definitely good. If a students messes up with 1 mid-sem, he can improve in the next 1 as he knows how the paper pattern would be. He would get to know how much knowledge of the subject he has and can study more accordingly for the next mid-sem.
Moreover there are many teachers for example GN Pillai, who takes quizzes in regular interval, which help both him (to analyze how much students are understanding) and the students (as they try to cope up with the subject).
The imp thing is that the questions in the exams should not be straight-forward, but a bit tricky and which involves good understanding of the subject. That would definitely help students to understand the subjects well and stand out as a "student of IIT".

As said by Mayank Garg Sir, Assignments and project give a better thinking and knowledge about to some and large extent about the subject. There are less changes of TIPNA from others if the topic of the groups or individuals are different. So yes it will be much better way to judge. It would also give the real meaning sense to SESSIONAL MARKS. In 2 MTE what we do is somehow mug up all the things and puke it out on the ANSWER scripts which are as said pretty straight forward.
Dumping One mte release the pressure of frequent exam but some weight must be put upon the paper left on the table otherwise it may fly when fan is switched on.For complement of example regular basis based SURPRISE as well as ANNOUNCED QUIZZES be taken which in current system is done one week before the official closing of teaching(which undefines its meaning and remains as just a formality)

Oh please do it. The current examination system just sucks.
Colleges should really get into a continuous evaluation system. I'm repeating myself, this is not a school, stop adopting school level stuff.
1MT+1ET accounting for 50% of a course's weightage and the rest should be assignments, projects, presentations, tutorials(:P), and whatnot.

it would certainly reduce the pressure and the weightage of one mid term can be given to projects etc..

I get that but then, the fear is that people would just copy from each other. You know they will - they just need to apply some cosmetic changes, change a few values here and there. And unless the prof has absolutely no work at all, the changes will not be noticed. And even if they are, people will find ways to outsmart the prof.

there should be 2 quizzes(1 per day for 1 hour followed by regular classes) per semester on a regular basis, rather than having a load of 3 exams on 1 day in d mid term. dat would keep d students on their toes and would also give them sufficient tym 2 study each subject.

Hi Mayank/Sushobhan
The question is directed to the 'janta' of IITR. Can we also post our view as faculties of the Institute. I for one consider myself to be a 'janta' of this institute whatever that means.
I direct this question to you as you seem to be the moderator for this particular thread.

Sir, the thread is definitely open to faculties of the institute. Your views would only enrich the level of discussion.

This all fails in case of heavily credited and simultaneously weirdly structured courses. Yes , we do happen to have a few courses wherein the examination pattern is so erratic that it usually takes us an MTE to gauge the depths of examination. having just one MTE and then a heavy weight ETE would just screw everything up . Also the idea of projects and 'presentations' (!), well the marking scheme in these cases becomes rather subjective(overtly, if I might add) and there is no concrete criteria on which the ppts are adjudged. Also, very true , friends in law school and various colleges in Delhi have always despised this structure, just give exams and be done with it. Well, I would make the sacrilege of relying totally on " word of mouth " but they say that burden actually INCREASES. Also, in many cases quizzes are not an apt representation of the exam pattern that one should expect, many are mere formalities and many tend to be obscurely diverse( mentioning theory as syllabus and spanning practicals and beyond) . Solution (let's not get all pessimistic): Better structured regular quizzes ( essence of continuous evaluation ), Alternate methods of judging performance, which may vary from subject to subject ( No! PPTs can't work in most of the departmental subjects) , models seem fine but yet again they leave a lot on teacher's discretion. Also, if we have a single MTE, its credit should not be huge , otherwise we end up having an end-term in disguise, with a lot on stake.

Letz have that Institute is going to start this scheme from next academic year for 1 complete session on a trial basis.
What could be the final make over of this 1 MTE scheme + Assignments(Topic totally new)....
How one will be evaluated,i.e., what should be the weightage to the soul MTE LEFT, Assignments, CWS, PRS, PRE, "Assignment submission week" etc etc so that this system functions properly??
P.S.: General or descriptive overview(Depends on post writer)
